MASTER CLASS
by Terrence McNally
Directed by Fred Anzevino
Music Direction by Jeremy Ramey

Inspired by a series of master classes conducted by the late great diva Maria Callas, this sparkling, rich play with incidental music by Verdi, Puccini and Bellini puts la diva back onstage as she coaxes and inspires her “victims” while she rivetingly regales us with secrets — professional and personal — of her own. Artistic Director Fred Anzevino tackles this 1996 Tony Award winner written by Terrence McNally.

Featuring two-time Jeff Award winner Kelli Harrington as Maria Callas, and Rachel Klippel, Ashlee Hardgrave and Kevin Siembor as her students.

“Bravissimo! There simply is no more fitting word with which to respond to Kelli Harrington?s tour de force performance as opera diva Maria Callas in ‘Master Class.'” Chicago Sun-Times

“(Kelli) Harrington is the kind of honest, vulnerable, generous and highly talented performer of whom Callas surely would have approved … She has nailed the side of Callas that loved her art and understood that she would have to teach the young to ensure the continuation of her own standards after her death.” Chicago Tribune

“Harrington carries herself like a true musician and it’s easy to believe her Callas was once the toast of the opera world and is still celebrated today.” Chicago Theater Beat

“Kelli Harrington dominates the stage as the fickle diva whose mere presence strikes terror into her students.” – Chicago Critic

“Directed with sheer precision by Fred Anzevino with just the right touch on a set designed by Adam L. Veness, who seems to know how to use this very small spot to its best advantage for viewing, this is an enchanting production.” Around the Town Chicago

“The astonishingly talented, two-time Jeff Award-winning Kelli Harrington not only becomes Maria Callas, she transforms her audience into her anxious students.” Chicago Theater Review

“(Kelli Harrington) draws us into her confidence, commanding the small stage with both zingy one-liners and deep wells of feeling.”  TimeOut Chicago
